Organic Search Clicks: The First Stage of a Casino Funnel

The first stage of an organic funnel is a click from Google to your site, as Search Console counts it. That number is real but narrow: it is not a visitor, a session or a person, and it will always be higher than the landing visits your analytics records.

What counts as an organic click

Google's Search Console help defines a click as "How often someone clicked a link from Google to your site." It counts a click when the link takes the person to a page outside Google Search, Discover or News. If someone returns from your page and clicks the same link again, that is still one click. Clicking a different link to your site counts separately.

Two other numbers sit beside clicks. An impression means "a user has seen (or potentially seen) a link to your site in Search, Discover, or News." Position is "A relative ranking of the position of your link on Google," and Search Console calculates it for Search results only. Impressions and position describe visibility. Clicks are the only one of the three that belongs in a funnel, because they are the only one where a person chose to come to you.

Why clicks never match landing visits

A landing visit is recorded by your analytics tool when its tag runs on the page. Several things happen between a Search Console click and that tag:

  • The visitor leaves before the page and tag finish loading.
  • The visitor declines analytics storage, and your consent setup records nothing or only cookieless signals. The consent and measurement guide explains how each setup changes the numbers.
  • The browser or an extension blocks the analytics script.
  • A redirect, such as a market or language redirect, starts the session on a different URL from the one Google listed.

None of these is an error in Search Console or in analytics. They are two instruments measuring two events. In the site's default model, 68% of clicks become landing visits. That figure is an illustrative input, not a measured average. Your own gap is worth tracking over time, because a sudden change usually means a tag or consent change rather than a change in demand.

Query totals and page totals differ

Search Console aggregates data in two ways. Its help pages say that "All results for the same query that point to the same Search Console property are counted once in total," while "Each unique URL in a Search result is counted separately, even if they point to the same site." Data grouped by queries, countries, devices or dates is aggregated by property; data grouped by pages is aggregated by page. As a result, "The chart totals can sometimes differ from the table totals."

For funnel work this means you should pick one grouping for the first stage and keep it. Page grouping fits a funnel best, because the next stage, a landing visit, also belongs to a page. Write the choice in the report so nobody compares a page-grouped month with a property-grouped one.

The newest days in the report can be preliminary. Google notes that preliminary data "may change in the next few hours" and that the report shows complete days by default. Close each reporting period a few days after it ends.

Split brand searches from topic searches

People who search for your brand already know you, while people who search a topic are still deciding whether to trust you, so their later rates differ. Report brand clicks and topic clicks as separate first stages, using the brand list described in the traffic quality checks.

Count only the markets you serve

Clicks from countries where you hold no license, or where the product is banned, inflate the first stage and push every later rate down. Build the first stage only from licensed markets, using the country filter set out in step 2 of the traffic quality checks.

What to record each month

A first-stage record that later stages can rely on

Brand and topic splitSeparates existing demand from new reach
Country, limited to licensed marketsKeeps clicks you cannot serve out of the base

Limits of this paper

This paper describes how Search Console and analytics tools count. It does not estimate how many clicks a casino or sportsbook site should get, and it uses no operator data. For how the first stage feeds the rates that follow, read funnel denominators.

Questions

Should the funnel start at impressions instead of clicks?

No. Impressions measure visibility, and many happen without anyone noticing the result. Start the funnel at clicks and report impressions and position beside it as context.

Why did clicks rise while landing visits stayed flat?

Look first at consent rates, tag changes, redirects and page speed. A change in the gap between the two systems usually comes from measurement, not demand.

Can Search Console clicks be joined to individual users?

No. Search Console reports aggregated clicks by query, page, country, device and date. It does not identify people, so the join to later stages happens at page level.
